After tornados tore 34 miles through the communities surrounding Springfield, MA, a call for volunteers was issued. Springfield, MA, Letter Carrier Philip Bissonnette knew his EMT training and background in tree cutting and well maintenance would come in handy. For several weeks, he volunteered each day after work as well as on his days off. Bissonnette even used some of his annual leave.

Beach Haven, NJ, Letter Carrier Thomas Logue was vacationing at the beach when he saw a young boy pulled out to deep waters by a rip current and then knocked underwater by a wave. Logue swam to where he last saw the child, dove under the water and pulled the boy to the surface. Placing the child on his shoulders, Logue swam against the strong current and returned the boy to his father.
